Are you eligible for skilled migration to Australia?

VISA SUBCLASS 189, 190 and 491

The most popular migration program that allows skilled workers to settle in Australia with their families.

The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) remains the “gold standard” for migration, but in 2026, it has evolved into a high-precision tool for the Australian government. For skilled professionals looking for a pathway that requires no sponsorship and offers immediate permanent residency, understanding the latest tier-based invitation system is essential for success.

What is the Subclass 189 Visa in 2026?

The Subclass 189 is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers whose occupations are in critical demand. Unlike the 190 or 491 visas, you don’t need a state nomination or an employer to “vouch” for you. You are invited solely based on your human capital: your skills, experience, and English proficiency.

The New 4-Tier Invitation Model

To manage the 2025–26 migration program, Australia now uses a prioritisation model that ranks occupations into tiers. This means that your points score is no longer the only factor—your occupation’s priority is just as important.

  • Tier 1 (Highest Priority): Medical specialists, surgeons, and high-level healthcare roles. These often receive invitations at lower points (75–80) and faster processing.
  • Tier 2 (High Priority): Registered nurses, secondary and early childhood teachers, and social workers.
  • Tier 3 (Medium Priority): Construction project managers, civil engineers, and skilled trades like carpenters and plumbers.
  • Tier 4 (Oversupplied): ICT professionals, accountants, and marketing specialists. These roles are highly competitive and often require 95+ points to receive an invitation.

The Points Test: What’s Competitive Now?

While the technical minimum to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) is 65 points, the 2026 reality is much higher for most fields.

  • Age: Maximum points (30) are awarded to those aged 25–32.
  • English: “Superior English” (IELTS 8+ or PTE 79+) is now virtually mandatory for Tier 3 and 4 professionals to stay competitive.
  • Experience: Australian work experience is weighted heavily, but a full 8 years of overseas experience can still provide a significant 15-point boost.
  • Partner Points: Don’t ignore these! A partner with a skills assessment and competent English can add up to 10 points, which is often the difference between an invite and a wait.

The 2026 Step-by-Step Roadmap

1. Skills Assessment

You cannot lodge an EOI without a positive skills assessment from your relevant authority (e.g., Engineers Australia, ACS, or ANMAC). In 2026, ensure your assessment is valid for at least 6 months before you submit to avoid expiration during a quarterly round.

2. The EOI & SkillSelect

Invitations are now issued in Quarterly Rounds (typically January, April, July, and October). Submitting your EOI early is critical because the “Date of Effect” acts as a tiebreaker for applicants with the same points.

3. Invitation & Lodgment

Once you receive an “Invitation to Apply” (ITA), you have exactly 60 days to lodge your full application. There are no extensions. You’ll need to provide proof for every claim made in your EOI, from employment references to tax records.

4. Processing & Finalization

As of March 2026, median processing times for skilled permanent visas have improved to approximately 11–14 months, though Tier 1 healthcare roles are often finalized even faster.

The Strategy for Success

If you are in a Tier 4 occupation (like IT or Accounting), relying solely on the 189 is risky. At TRV Global, we recommend a “multi-track” strategy: lodge your 189 EOI, but simultaneously pursue State Nomination (190) or the Regional (491) pathway to maximize your chances.
