Step 1 – Eligibility Assessment
First, you need to check if you actually qualify. This is the first step where you check your eligibility for the program. You can take help from migration experts.

This means looking at your age, education, work experience, English score, and total points. Also, your occupation must be on the relevant skilled list. This step is important because applying without meeting the criteria will only waste time and money.

Step 2 – Skills Assessment
Next, you’ll need a positive skills assessment from the right authority in Australia, depending on your job. What this assessing authority will do is check your qualification and work experience and assess whether your selected occupation perfectly matches your profile or not. Note that if you get a negative outcome in this step, you cannot move forward, and the dream of a skilled migration application may end. So, you must be very careful.

Step 3 – Submit EOI
After that, you submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. Think of this as creating your profile for the Australian government. You include your qualifications, experience, and points. Then you wait for an invitation — you don’t apply for the visa yet at this stage.

Step 4 – State Nomination (For 190 & 491)
If you’re going for Subclass 190 or 491, you’ll also need to apply for a state nomination. Each state has its own requirements, so you have to choose carefully. Once a state approves you, they’ll nominate you, which increases your points and improves your chances of getting invited.

Step 5 – Lodge Visa Application
Once you receive an invitation, things move fast. You’ll have 60 days to submit your visa application through the Department of Home Affairs Australia. At this stage, you upload all your documents — education, work experience, English test, police clearance, medicals, everything. This is the final and most important step, so accuracy is key.

Can I apply for skilled migration to Australia from Bangladesh?

Yes. Being a Bangladeshi national does not restrict you from applying for any of Australia’s skilled migration pathways. The program is open to applicants worldwide, and Australia actively encourages skilled professionals from Bangladesh to apply, particularly in high-demand fields such as healthcare, engineering, information technology, construction, and education. The process is the same regardless of your country of origin — you must meet the occupation, skills assessment, points test, English, health, and character requirements. Biometric data (photo and fingerprints) is required for all applications processed through Bangladesh.

What IELTS score do I need for skilled migration from Bangladesh to Australia?

The baseline for most skilled migration visas is Competent English, which means a minimum score of 6.0 in each of the four IELTS bands (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) — or an equivalent result in PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT. However, scoring higher has a direct benefit: a Proficient English result (IELTS 7.0 in each band) earns 10 bonus points, and a Superior English result (IELTS 8.0 in each band) earns 20 bonus points. For many Bangladeshi applicants, improving an IELTS score from 6.0 to 7.0 or beyond is one of the most cost-effective ways to boost their overall points. English test results are valid for three years, but the result must still be valid at the time of invitation and visa lodgement.

How many points do I realistically need to receive an invitation from Bangladesh?

The minimum threshold to be in the SkillSelect pool is 65 points, but that alone is unlikely to result in an invitation in most occupations under the Subclass 189 stream, where invitation scores have historically been in the 80–90+ range for popular occupations. For state-nominated pathways (190 and 491), the effective starting score before state bonus points is often 65–70, and the additional 5 or 15 points from nomination can make the difference. As a general rule, Bangladeshi applicants aiming for skilled migration should target a base score of 75–80 or higher before accounting for any state nomination points, giving themselves a realistic buffer against increasing competition in 2026.
